The Wisconsin 401(k) withholding calculator on this page helps employers and employees estimate how a traditional 401(k) contribution may affect take-home pay. By entering a few payroll details, you can get a quick preview of how pre-tax deferrals, federal withholding, Wisconsin state income tax withholding, and FICA taxes may impact a paycheck.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator estimates paycheck results by factoring in regular wages, overtime, other earnings, employee 401(k) contributions, and an optional employer match. It then applies estimated federal withholding, Wisconsin state income tax withholding, Social Security, Medicare, and Additional Medicare to provide an approximate net pay amount.

Because 401(k) contributions are generally treated as pre-tax for federal income tax purposes, they may reduce taxable wages for those calculations. In Wisconsin, 401(k) contributions may also reduce taxable wages for state income tax withholding purposes in many payroll situations. However, 401(k) contributions generally do not reduce Social Security or Medicare wages.

Wisconsin imposes state individual income tax withholding on wages, so wage withholding generally includes a state income tax component. For 2026 estimates, this calculator uses a simplified annualized Wisconsin withholding estimate based on annual wages, Wisconsin withholding exemptions, and the state withholding method. Actual withholding may vary depending on the employee’s Wisconsin Form WT-4, taxable wages, pay frequency, exemptions, deductions, payroll setup, residency, work location, and other payroll factors.

Wisconsin does not have a statewide employee-paid Paid Family Leave, SDI, or TDI payroll deduction included in this calculator. This estimate focuses on federal withholding, FICA taxes, Additional Medicare when applicable, and Wisconsin state income tax withholding.

This estimate includes federal withholding, FICA taxes, and Wisconsin state income tax withholding. It does not include potential employer payroll taxes, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation premiums, local taxes, benefit deductions, garnishments, or other deductions that may apply depending on the employee’s situation.

Important Notes

This calculator is intended for informational and planning purposes only. Results are estimates and may not reflect every situation, payroll setup, deduction, exemption, or tax election.
