The Washington 401(k) withholding calculator on this page helps employers and employees estimate how a traditional 401(k) contribution may affect take-home pay. By entering a few payroll details, you can get a quick preview of how pre-tax deferrals, federal withholding, Washington payroll deductions, and FICA taxes may impact a paycheck.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator estimates paycheck results by factoring in regular wages, overtime, other earnings, employee 401(k) contributions, and an optional employer match. It then applies estimated federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare, Additional Medicare, and optional Washington payroll deductions such as Washington Paid Family & Medical Leave and WA Cares Fund to provide an approximate net pay amount.

Because 401(k) contributions are generally treated as pre-tax for federal income tax purposes, they may reduce taxable wages for those calculations. Because Washington does not impose state income tax withholding on wages, there is no Washington state income tax reduction to calculate in this estimator. However, 401(k) contributions generally do not reduce Social Security or Medicare wages.

Washington does not impose state individual income tax on wages, so wage withholding does not include a Washington state income tax component. However, Washington employees may still be subject to payroll-related deductions, including Washington Paid Family & Medical Leave and WA Cares Fund, depending on eligibility, exemptions, year-to-date wages, and payroll setup.

For 2026 estimates, this calculator uses a simplified Washington Paid Family & Medical Leave employee premium estimate based on the 2026 premium rate and employee share, and a WA Cares Fund estimate of 0.58% of applicable wages when selected. Actual deductions may vary based on the employee’s exemptions, employer configuration, year-to-date wages, payroll timing, residency, work location, and applicable Washington program rules.

This estimate includes federal withholding, FICA taxes, Washington Paid Family & Medical Leave, and WA Cares Fund when selected. It does not include potential employer payroll taxes, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation premiums, local taxes, benefit deductions, garnishments, or other deductions that may apply depending on the employee’s situation.

Important Notes

This calculator is intended for informational and planning purposes only. Results are estimates and may not reflect every situation, payroll setup, deduction, exemption, or tax election. Actual paycheck amounts can vary based on your employee’s withholding forms, year-to-date wages, benefits, approved exemptions, and other payroll factors.
