New York Employers' 401(k) Withholding Calculator

The New York gross-up calculator on this page helps employers estimate the gross payment needed to deliver a specific net supplemental payment to an employee. By entering a few payroll details, you can quickly see how federal supplemental withholding, New York State withholding, and FICA taxes may affect the final gross-up amount.
How This Calculator Works
This calculator starts with the employee’s target net payment and works backward to estimate the gross payment required to reach that amount after withholding. It factors in federal supplemental withholding, New York State income tax withholding, Social Security, Medicare, and Additional Medicare to provide an approximate gross-up result.
Because gross-up payments are designed to cover the taxes associated with a supplemental payment, the calculator estimates the withholding impact first and then solves for the gross amount needed so that the employee receives the intended net payment. This can be especially helpful when an employer wants to cover the tax burden on a bonus, fringe benefit, relocation payment, or other supplemental wage payment.
New York does impose state individual income tax, and wage withholding is generally based on an annualized method that takes filing status, withholding allowances, and the applicable state withholding tables into account. For that reason, this estimate includes New York State withholding, along with federal supplemental withholding and FICA taxes. New York uses a progressive income tax structure with multiple tax brackets depending on income level.
Important Notes
This calculator is intended for informational and planning purposes only. Results are estimates and may not reflect every situation, payroll setup, deduction, exemption election, or year-to-date wage detail. Actual payment amounts can vary based on the employee’s filing status, New York withholding setup, prior wages, and other payroll factors.
This version is designed to estimate New York State withholding only and does not include separate New York City or Yonkers local withholding.
